There was always much rivalry between Southwick and Shoreham for many years and particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This often developed into serious fights between men of both towns, usually on Saturday nights at Kingston Bridge when both sides were doubtless fuelled by quantities of beer previously imbibed. Even into the 1960’s fights occurred between rival gangs from both towns. Continue reading “The Southwick Cat and Shoreham Musselman”
Rope and Sail Makers
-the Tillstone and English families
“…… the shouts of the workers, the creak of the rope and winches, the ringing of the signal bells and the pervading smell of tar must have left a strong impression on the senses.”
Rope and sail making has been an important part of Shoreham’s shipbuilding industry for hundreds of years but it is only during the 18th and 19th centuries that we know more of the men and their families involved.
James Rooke’s Memoirs
The recollections of James Rooke written down as he dictated them by Louisa Gorringe of Kingston House, Kingston-by-Sea. (Louisa was the wife of Hugh Gorringe and mother of William Hugh and George Frederick Gorringe.)
Richard Steers – 1930s Racing Cyclist
Shoreham has something of a history of racing cyclists. The first ones we know of were A.F.W. Eade, the 20 year-old son of the Eade’s Stores owner; Fred Read and George Hedgecock, a 26 year old bootmaker, who came first, second and third respectively in a 10 miles race organized by the Shoreham YMCA Cycling Club on the 10th July 1888.
Rhodesia – a special ‘bungalow’
The 1901 census shows Agnes E. Rhodes at ‘Rhodesia’ in Bungalow Town with her three children, Ellen (stepdaughter), Eva and Winifred. Agnes was the daughter of William Sherman a Stepney, London, mariner. At the age of 18 she married widower John Richard Rhodes in 1889. Continue reading “Rhodesia – a special ‘bungalow’”

Transcribed in 2003 by Brenda Bateman from the 1833 New Shoreham Parish Poor Rate records held at the West Sussex Records Office, Chichester
Parish Poor Rates for New Shoreham 1827
These rates, later to become known as household rates then community tax, have been researched from the early 19th century to 1910 and from 1841 were matched to the census returns in order to help establish the streets and buildings they relate to. Road and street names were not included in the originals and these have been identified from owners/occupiers names from other records where the property locations were known (the earlier years were matched initially to some of the 1782 Survey records, then on to Land Tax lists using deeds etc., where possible to pin-point a few properties exactly).
The results are not totally accurate but others may find the records useful and may even eventually enable more positive identification. This is the earliest year used in the exercise (the later, 1833 PPR’s already recorded are an exact transcript of the original).
Points to be aware of:-
The first and last few properties in each road are uncertain.
As with census returns the order of names/properties within each street is also uncertain but patterns do occur.
All property descriptions are houses unless stated to the contrary; for those with property other than houses these are listed in the next line down – care, these multi-property situations often include all the owners’ properties from other parts of the town.
